Jesus Cristo fez da ceia um sinal privilegiado de sua presença no mundo. Desde então, as comunidades cristãs aprenderam a considerar todo alimento como expressão do dom amoroso de Deus. Isso é herança do judaísmo. Um rabino dizia: "Quem come sem dar graças apossa-se indevidamente de algo que recebeu de Deus. Portanto, esta pessoa não tomou o alimento. Roubou-o".

Uma verdadeira espiritualidade não divide corpo e alma. Jesus ensinou aos discípulos orar ao Pai e incluir na prece do "Pai nosso" a preocupação com o pão de cada dia. A uma irmã que lhe perguntou onde encontrava mais a Deus, a grande mística Santa Tereza respondeu: "nas panelas da cozinha".

A sacralidade do alimento como dom de Deus se expressa na forma sadia de alimentar-se, no cuidado com a vida de todos e no respeito à terra e à dignidade dos seres vivos. Por isso, é de se esperar que pastores das igrejas ! cristãs, sempre atentos em defender o que chamam de "lei natural", se mobilizem para lutar contra os alimentos transgênicos, ou seja, grãos vindos de sementes geneticamente modificadas. De um governo - que sirva verdadeiramente ao seu povo e não aos interesses das multinacionais — esperamos uma atitude firme e que não ceda às pressões para abrir o país a este mercado. Será que alguém, em sã consciência, pensa mesmo que alimentos transgênicos são feitos para diminuir a fome dos países pobres? Por acaso, as cinco grandes multinacionais que, no mundo inteiro, controlam toda a produção de sementes transgênicas as produzem pensando em beneficiar os países pobres ou em resolver o problema da fome? Todo mundo sabe que todo e qualquer cultivo transgênico está patenteado. As sementes não podem ser usadas para uma nova semeadura sem pagar os direitos de patente. Além disso, a Monsanto e as outras multinacionais que produzem transgênicos têm patentes sobre a tecnologia "Terminator" : sementes ! suicidas que não germinam na segunda geração. E elas mesmas fabricam e vendem os produtos químicos agrícolas (agrotóxicos) que envenenam nossos rios, destroem ecossistemas e provocam, em nós e nos animais, doenças que não sabemos como as contraímos. Condicionam a compra do alimento transgênico ao agrotóxico por elas produzidos. É venda casada. Comprou uma coisa tem de adquirir a outra. O lucro das empresas garante venenos para todos os gostos e em todas as etapas da produção: na terra que se cultiva, na semente fabricada artificialmente para ser estéril e assassina e no alimento que vem às nossas mesas. O Doutor Frankeinstein ficaria muito feliz com esta nova versão de sua engenhosidade.

Todo ser humano depende de alimento e não pode ser uma comida qualquer. Pensemos nos desequilíbrios da anorexia: a pessoa que não consegue alimentar-se pode até morrer porque a angústia vital lhe impede de ingerir alimentos. Pensemos, ao contrário, em mais de um bilhão de seres humanos que qu! er comer e não tem. Há também a ansiedade da multidão que hoje faz dieta ou as muitas pessoas que engordam de forma descontrolada. Isso existe mesmo entre a população negra e pobre dos Estados Unidos, como entre os índios do Brasil. Tudo isso revela que não basta alimentar-se. É preciso saber como e por quê. Há vários níveis de fome como graus diferentes de segurança alimentar. A fome não se sacia com qualquer tipo de comida. A saúde só é garantida com um alimento saudável e recebido de forma adequada. Seguir uma dieta significa buscar a forma correta de receber através do alimento a energia de vida neles contida. Como se dará isso se este fluxo de energia vital dos alimentos não existe mais? Ou é exatamente pensado para não passar energia e não comunicar vida e sim lucro a quem vende o alimento e dependência econômica e mesmo morte a quem cultiva e recebe o produto?

A "segurança alimentar" só pode significar a preocupação e o compromisso em garantir alimentos com os atributos adequados à saúde dos consumidores. Ou seja, um correto teor nutriente, sem contaminação de natureza química, biológica ou física e nada que possa prejudicar a saúde do povo.

Quem vive uma espiritualidade ecumênica procura ir à raiz das questões. Não aceita que se ponha em risco a vida dos seres humanos e a integridade do planeta apenas por interesses econômicos das multinacionais. Elegemos governantes para nos representar. Eles, sem nos consultar, não podem nos substituir nas decisões fundamentais à vida de todos.

É estranho um cristão ouvir o ministro pronunciar as palavras de Cristo sobre o pão: "Isto é o meu corpo" e saber que aquele pão é feito de trigo transgênico, produzido com tecnologia "Terminal" suicida e cultivado com agrotóxicos mortíferos. Temos o direito de ver em toda a natureza os sinais da presença de Deus, energia de amor do universo.

Jornada pela Democratização da Mídia
Entidades e veículos de comunicação alternativos estão articulando para o mês de novembro a Jornada pela Democratização da Mídia. O evento abrange debates, manifestações de rua e pelo menos três grandes atos públicos: um no Mineirinho, em Belo Horizonte no dia 8 de novembro, junto as atividades do Fórum Social Brasileiro; outro no Rio de Janeiro, dia 10; e o terceiro em São Paulo, no TUCA, no dia 11.
O objetivo da jornada é a luta por um sistema de comunicação mais democrático, além de chamar a atenção da sociedade para a manipulação dos fatos praticada pelos principais veículos comerciais do país.

Jesus Christ made supper a special symbol of his presence in the world. Ever since, Christian communities have learned to consider all food a manifestation of the loving gift of God. This idea is inherited from Judaism. A rabbi once said: "He who eats without giving thanks has wrongly taken of something that he has received from God. Therefore, this person has not eaten the food. He has robbed it."

True spirituality does not divide the body and spirit. Jesus taught his disciples to pray to the Lord and include in the prayer "Our Father" a concern for their daily bread. When Mother Teresa was asked by a sister where God might be found most, the wise sage replied: "in kitchen pots."

Reverence for food as a gift from God may be expressed in a healthy way of eating, concern for each and every life, with respect to the earth, and dignity for all living things. This is why it can be hoped that the church’s flock, Christians – always ready to defend what they call the "natural law" – will mobilize to struggle against transgenic foods, grain made from genetically modified seeds. From government – one which truly serves its people and not the interests of multinational corporations – we hope for a firm stance that does not give in to pressure to open the country to such markets. Is it really possible that any sane person could believe that transgenetic foods truly are produced to alleviate hunger in poor countries? By some strange coincidence, have the five large multinationals that control the production of transgenic seeds the world over produced them hoping to benefit poor countries and resolve the problem of hunger? Everyone knows that each and every transgenic culture is patented. The seeds cannot be reused for new sewing without paying patent rights. Moreover, Monsanto Corporation and other multinationals that produce transgenics have patents for a "Terminator" technology: suicide-seeds that do not germinate for a second season. And these same companies produce and sell the agrotoxic chemical products that poison our rivers, destroy ecosystems and cause, both in us and in animals, ailments that we contract unawares. They manipulate the sale of transgenic food to compliment the agrotoxic chemicals that they themselves produce. It’s a marriage of products: once one is bought, the other must follow. The pursuit of company profits guarantees poisons in all flavors and in all stages of production: in the cultivated earth, in the seed artifically-engineered to be sterile and suicidal, and in the food that comes to our kitchen tables. Doctor Frankenstein would be very pleased with this new form of his own ingenuity.

All human beings depend on nutrition, but it cannot be just any food. Consider the nutritional imbalance of anorexia: a person that doesn’t feed himself can starve until death because anguish prevents him from ingesting necessary foodstuffs. Now consider, in contrast, that there are more than a billion human beings that want to eat and cannot. There are also the multitudes of people that anxiously diet or the many people that gain weight uncontrollably. This exists just the same in the black and poor populations of the United States as it does in the indigenous populations of Brazil. All this tells us that it is not enough just to eat. It is necessary to know how and why. There are different degrees of hunger as there are levels of food security. Hunger is not satiated by just any type of food. Health is only guaranteed by healthful food received in the proper form. Following a proper diet means looking for the correct way to receive the life-energy contained in the food. How will food give this life-energy if it no longer exists? Or is it planned by the corporations precisely not to pass its energy and not transmit life, and instead for profit for he who sells the food, and economic dependence and even death for he who cultivates and receives the product?

"Food security" can only mean the concern and commitment to guarantee food adequate for the health of its consumers. Or rather, a proper nutrient content, without chemical, biological, or physical contamination of nature that might endanger people’s health.

He who lives with a universal spirituality searches at the root of the question. He does not accept risking the lives of human beings nor the integrity of the planet solely for the economic interests of multinational corporations. We elect governments to represent us. They, without consulting us, cannot speak for us concerning fundamental decisions affecting the lives of everyone.

It is strange for a Christian to hear the minister repeat over the bread Christ’s words: "This is my body" and know that that bread is made from transgenic wheat, produced with "Terminator" suicidal technology and cultivated with deadly agrotoxic chemicals. We have the right to see the signs of the God’s presence in all of nature, the energy of love in the universe.

Media Democratization Day
Entities and vehicles of alternative press are calling for a Media Democritization Day in November. The event includes debates, street demonstrations, and at least three grand public happenings: one in Mineirinho; in Belo Horizonte on November 8, together with the Brazilian Social Forum; another in Rio de Janeiro on the 10th; and the third in São Paulo, on the 11th at the TUCA.
The goal of marking this day is to struggle for a more democratic mass communication system, as well as to call people’s attention to the manipulation of facts practiced by the principal vehicles of communication in the country.
